Julius' link picks for February 1st
Here are Julius' picks for February 1st:
- A "Drug Bust" Gone Wrong: One Dead, One In Jail, No Criminal Possession - One of the saddest stories I've read in a while. Police received an anonymous tip that a man was growing marijuana. Police performed a no-knock raid. As anyone might do when armed men burst through your door, the man attempted to defend himself. Firing in self defense, he shot and killed an officer. As it turns out, the plants in the back yard that sparked the tip were not marijuana plants -- the only cannabis the man had was in his personal stash; barely enough for a misdemeanor.
- Obama: Decriminalize pot - Yet another candidate in the US Elections comes out in favor of marijuana... well... kinda. Mr. Obama stated that he's in favor of eliminating criminal penalties for possession of cannabis, but not in favor of legalization. At least it's better than the status quo.
- Various Marijuana Tax Stamps - After cannabis was classified as a narcotic in 1937, several states required the declaration and taxation of all privately-owned marijuana. In order to indicate that your stash was properly paid for, you needed to purchase a stamp and affix it to the container your marijuana was held in. Stamps are no longer used, but it's still interesting to see the stamps.
